Liaison

It’s only fitting that Danny Colls featured recently in the TV ad for Melbourne’s Food & Wine Festival.

He’s the handsome guy who helped change our coffee culture by bringing us popular cafe institutions including Coffee Darling, Postal Hall, GPO and the world famous, (especially if you’re a cycling fan) Cafe Racer on Marine Parade in St.Kilda.

His latest offering, Liaison, is a tiny gem in the big city, especially if you are someone who frequents the Parliament House end of the city.

Petite and slightly obscure, Liaison sits under the architecturally designed Monaco House, facing the long wall of the Melbourne Clubs rear garden with its own design edge and lots of small thoughtful touches that add to the aesthetics and warmth.

Run with his lovely partner Sian McLaine (until recently a novice in the hospitality industry), they are the consummate hosts, mixing cafe social with fantastic coffee and more.

The menu is small but consists of lots of favourites and you won’t go hungry. For breakfast it’s muesli, pastries, fruit toast, croissants, fruit salad, porridge and for lunch its sandwiches, paninos, soup of the day, rice salad and more.   

At a time when some cafes want to be unique by serving private blends or roasts, Danny remains one of Melbourne’s best baristas pumping out rich, delicious coffee using beans from the long established Genovese stable.

Liaison has already attracted a loyal band of customers and friends and once you’ve been there, you’ll be hooked as well.

A little hard to find but well worth seeking out when you visit the top end of town for your coffee fix and more.
