Von Haus
Across from Pellegrini’s and honouring one of Australia’s most acclaimed landscape and portrait artists, Eugene Von Guerard*, is the wonderful Von Haus bar.
Set off the street in the rear of a non-descript building, Von Guerard lived/worked here in the late 1800’s and taking this historical reference, the owners decided to honour him by incorporating his name into the bar.
Von Haus is another example of how visionary our restaurateurs/licencees can be when looking for a location to start a business.
While it’s not hard to find, you’d need to know it was there. The first time I visited, I headed upstairs and ended up in one of the offices…and I knew where the bar was!!
There’s not alot to tell of Von Haus because as one small room (with an attached small outdoor area), there’s not alot to it.
Simply put, it’s cute and well worth discovering (or keeping quiet about).
There’s seating for only around 30 in a homely space athat offers great atmosphere, an excellent winelist and good food to accompany your favourite tipple, as well as a small breakfast and lunch menu.
Staff are obliging, friendly and knowledgeable.
Being warm and with subdued lighting, this is also a good place perhaps even a little intimate for a first date or a catch up with friends. No pretention, just a great Melbourne ‘spot’.
